Assessment in the Arts - Summer 2008
Note: This course can only be taken as part of the Arts Assessment Institute. Participants can register if they have both enrolled and participated in the Institute.
Course Overview and Objectives:
This course is designed as a companion to the New England Arts Assessment Institute. Students will be active participants in all three and a half days of the conference and must complete an additional 12 hours of directed study in arts assessment. This course is designed for students of varying experience with educational assessment, different academic disciplines, and different school districts. Prerequisites based on level selected. The objectives are to:
- Become familiar with (or to gain a deeper understanding of) key terms, skills, and perspectives found in arts assessment
- Demonstrate the ability to apply conference material to current (or future) teaching situations.
Level I – Introduction to assessment. Students will work on developing an understanding of assessment terms and ideas and basic implementation within their individual classrooms. The final product will include a basic assessment plan that conforms to National, State, and Local standards.
Level II – Intermediate assessment. Students will work on developing a deeper understanding of assessment and implementation within the classroom. The final product will include a detailed assessment plan that conforms to National, State, and Local standards. Prerequisite: Level I or permission of the dean.
Level III- Advanced assessment. Students will develop a deep understanding of arts assessment and the ability to assist their less experienced colleagues to add their department in embedding assessment at all levels. The final product will include a detailed implementation project that demonstrates an advanced understanding of assessment practices and an ability to share with colleagues and administration. Prerequisite: Level I, II, or permission of the dean.
