Communication Skills for Educators

Course Overview and Objectives:  This course is designed for all individuals involved with running schools (e.g., teachers, specialists, para-educators, parents, clerical staff, volunteers, administrators, central office, school board members, and community resources). It is based on the belief that when adults work effectively with each other, students benefit. This type of school climate is characterized by:

  • working relationships that promote respect, trust, honesty and safety;
  • interpersonal communication that leads to clear understanding of diverse points of view without judgment;
  • assertiveness that is both honest and compassionate;
  • problem solving that involves stakeholders; and
  • rigorous commitment to recognizing and validating individual strengths.

These characteristics help develop schools where energy is more likely focused on growth and improvement rather than rumor and historical resistance. The effective use of communication skills helps to build strong bonds among the members of the learning community and promotes:

  • improved student relations and greater learning;
  • enhanced ability of faculty to work together;
  • greater understanding and less tension in parent meetings; and
  • healthier dialogue between teachers and administrators.
