Responsive Classroom I

Course Overview and Objectives:

The revised Level 1 weeklong course (RC1R) is an entry point offering that lays a strong foundation in the Responsive Classroom approach. We have designed this weeklong course with a goal of deepening teachers’ understanding of the central concepts upon which Responsive Classroom practice builds. Understanding these concepts allows teachers to apply the practices they learn to their own classroom situations, to problem-solve and develop increasing expertise with the practices over time, and to explain and advocate for the use of Responsive Classroom practices in their classrooms and beyond.
Upon completion of RC1R, teachers should have grown in their abilities to:

  • Explain key concepts in their own words and relate them to the Responsive Classroom practices taught during the week as well as to their teaching practice in general.
  • Demonstrate the ability to implement designated practices with accuracy and explain appropriate contexts and considerations for their use.
  • Recognize that the Responsive Classroom approach is a broad approach to education incorporating important applications to both social and academic aspects of classroom life beyond the practices directly taught in RC1R.

Become aware of the range and value of advanced offerings regarding the Responsive Classroom approach.
