Teaching Reading Comprehension: Strategies that Work to Enhance Understanding
Course Overview and Objectives:
Teachers, have you been wondering why some students can read the words but not answer the questions? This course looks at the complex processes of thinking that make up this invisible skill called Reading. We’ll explore ways to get students connecting, comprehending and responding to the written word. This course is for teachers of grades K-12 who want to support good comprehension of fiction and non-fiction including content areas of reading: Science, Social Studies, Math and English. This course will explore the dynamic processes of thinking required of any reader in order to comprehend well. Specific approaches to teaching these strategies will be modeled. Time to apply these strategies in planning for your classroom will be included.
This course will cover the following aspects of reading comprehension:
- The Nine Strategies that all readers use (I’M A READER)
- Best practices in teaching to enhance comprehension
- Instructional routines to use with students
- Coaching and conferring with students
Cost: Fee of $100 payable to Windsor Southeast Supervisory Union and $327.00 for three (3) Castleton State College graduate credits, payable to Castleton State College. Tuition will be collected at the first class meeting on June 23, 2008.
