The Facilities Department at Castleton University oversees and maintains the buildings and grounds for the University campus as well as the vehicle fleet.
Buildings
The Facilities Department is responsible for the inner workings and maintenance of thirty buildings on campus and for the Spartan Arena located in Rutland. Such responsibility includes electrical maintenance, repairs and enhancements, telephone installation, repairs and upgrades, plumbing, heating/cooling maintenance, as well as carpentry renovations and repairs.
The Facilities Department is responsible for all maintenance contractors on campus and oversees all third-party construction projects that take place on behalf of the University.
The Facilities Department is also responsible for the daily cleaning of the 30 buildings on campus consisting of +/- 800,000 square feet. This includes general cleaning, trash removal, recycling, pool maintenance, and the general setting up for events that may be taking place on any given day. Over school breaks, larger cleaning projects take place such as shampooing carpets, waxing and buffing floors, window cleaning, and deep cleaning of the residence halls.
Grounds
In addition to the buildings, Facilities maintains and grooms +/- 160 acres of grounds and gardens which include six athletic fields, running/fitness trails, and Dave Wolk Stadium as well as +/- 60 flower beds and shrub gardens throughout the campus. Snow removal of all parking areas and walkways also falls under the grounds group as does the maintenance of the new winter skating rink located at the Pavilion. In addition, maintenance of all outdoor lighting is part of the regular upkeep of the campus.
Fleet
Facilities at Castleton maintains a small fleet of vehicles for use when traveling on University business. Currently, the fleet consists of four twelve-passenger vans, four cars, one mini-van, and one wheelchair accessible mini-van. Our mechanic maintains and repairs all fleet vehicles as well as numerous maintenance vehicles and associated equipment.
