Classes 6:30 – 8 pm (online via Adobe Connect) on 1/15, 1/22, 3/7, Offline Work, Face-to Face Work at Vermont-NEA during the a minimum of two “Writing Days” (2/20, 2/22, 2/23, 2/26, 2/27, 2/28, 3/1, 3/2, 3/5, 3/24, 4/16, 4/23, and there may be more added)|

This course supports National Board Certified teachers (NBCTs) through the renewal process. Through review of the Five Core Propositions, Standards for Teaching, three types of writing, theories of leadership, and best practices within content areas, NBCTs create their Profile of Professional Growth and submit it to the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards and achieve renewal of their National Board Certification.
Rationale: Accomplished teaching, as outlined by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) is recognized by NBPTS by achieving National Board Certification. Accomplished teachers continually grow throughout their profession and the National Board renewal process requires teachers to document, analyze and reflect on their growth as an educator in four areas identified by the candidate. This class will support NBCTs through this process leading to National Board renewal.
• Define, identify, and practice the three types of writing: descriptive, analytical, and reflective.
• Review, critique, and provide constructive feedback to others
• Research best practices related to teaching content
• Understand and apply the Five Core Propositions to teaching and learning
• Research and understand teacher leadership styles as it relates to the candidate’s profile of professional growth.
• Analyze and reflect on teaching practices utilizing video from classroom practice.
• Complete the four components required of the Profile of Professional Growth as outlined by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
I. Class one: January 6th 6:30-8:00 pm (1.5 hrs)
a. Review the components of the Profile of Professional Growth
b. Review and discuss the Five Core Propositions and Teaching Standards
c. Review and discuss the three types of writing required in the Profile of Professional Growth
d. Brainstorm areas for inclusion in Component #1
e. Quality Video Taping
f. Registration for Credit and NBPTS
II. Offline work: January 6-January 22nd
a. Create Draft of Component #1
b. Collect evidences to be included in Component #1
III. Class two: January 22nd 6:30-8:00 pm (1.5 hrs)
a. Dig into Component 2 & 3
b. Plan video for Component 2
c. Plan Component 3 (Choice of Video or Student Work)
d. Select peer review partners
IV. Offline/Online Work- October – January 22nd-March 2nd
a. Videotape Classes for Component #2
b. Select section to be included and share with peer review partners
c. Watch and comment on peer video
d. Gather evidence for Component #3. If video is used, share with peer review partner
e. Gather resource material for components #2 and #3
f. Read and comment on peer component #1
V. Class three: Select a minimum of one day (February 19th-March 2nd – Days will be shared on class one) – (8 hrs)
a. Analyze videos and make selection for PPG
b. Write first draft of component #2
c. Write first draft of component #3, including video or students work samples
VI. Class four: March 7th 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm (1.5 hrs)
a. Review components 1-3 work and status
b. Review final reflection requirements
VII. Online Work: March 7th-April
a. Continue to finish/revise Components 1-3
b. Outline final reflection in which you analyze the connections and patterns among all three components on your PPG from the perspective of your role as an educator.
c. Outline plans for continued professional growth
d. Write first draft of component #4
VIII. Class five: April 9th – 19th (Select at least one day – Days will be shared on Class one) – (8 hrs)
a. Review all components
b. Put the components and evidences together, ready for upload
c. If ready, participants can upload entire PPG, finishing the process of renewal!
IX. Additional Days: To Be Announced. Vermont-NEA will host three “Homestretch Days” of which you are welcome to take advantage. These days will be writing days at Vermont-NEA and will be facilitated by Juliette Longchamp. Other participants will include initial candidates for NBC finalizing their work for upload.
