Course Description

This course addresses the social emotional aspects of math instruction that can increase engagement and achievement at every level. Participants will learn about math mindsets that encourage all students to be “smart” in math. They will develop strategies for creating cultures of learning in math classes. Participants will design challenging math tasks that are accessible to a wide range of students. The class will collaboratively design a website that can be used as a resource after the course ends.

Course Goals & Objectives

Course Goals:

Increase equity in math classes by designing instructional materials that promote concept development rather than procedural math.

Course Objectives:

  1. Identify strategies for creating a culture of learning
  2. Identify strategies for promoting equity in math classrooms
  3. Identify characteristics of math tasks that focus on concepts rather than procedures
  4. Design challenging math tasks that have low entry points and high exit points
  5. Integrate conceptual math with procedural math
  6. Create routines and procedures that promote equity in math
