ACT II seeks to prepare liberally-educated men and women
as extraordinary teachers.
Dear Prospective Student;
Thank you for inquiring about the new post-baccalaureate program with licensure in elementary or secondary education at Castleton. Since students will be either changing careers or returning to school, we are calling the program “ACT II”. Our next cohort will begin in the summer of 2008 and can expect to be licensed in one year.
This program is offered to students who have completed appropriate liberal arts and science, or other professional bachelor’s degrees, from an accredited college or university and are seeking initial teaching licensure. The liberal arts major must correspond to the desired area of licensure. Within the first semester, students will need to pass Praxis I and Praxis II in the appropriate subject area, since this is a requirement of the Vermont Department of Education. Students may need only to take Praxis II if they have qualifying SAT or GRE scores, as described on the application.
The Castleton Post-Baccalaureate Program is intensive and standards-based. Students work together as a cohort and will be recommended for licensure after successfully earning 36 credits during the three semesters (summer, fall and spring) of the program. It will be possible for students earning licensure in this program to subsequently apply for admission to the Master of Arts in Education program at Castleton.
You can understand better what is expected of a teacher in Vermont by reading The Five Standards for Vermont Educators.
I look forward to seeing your application soon. Thanks for considering Castleton.
Best wishes,
Harry Chaucer
