SOS Position Description
The job of an SOS is to serve as a role model, peer counselor, peer academic advisor, and group facilitator for new students during the summer Registration sessions, Orientation, and Connections.
Duties
- Be a responsible representative of Castleton.
- Uphold the Castleton University Code of Conduct.
- Serve as a peer advisor to new students, including first-year students and transfers.
- Plan, initiate, and co-facilitate activities involving small and large groups of new students and their families.
- Participate actively in registration, orientation, and Connections programs presented for new students and their families.
- Serve as Community Advisors when new students are residing in the residence halls during registration periods.
- Attend all training periods scheduled during the Spring and Fall semesters and immediately preceding registration and orientation.
- Work closely with an Connections instructor/advisor during registration, orientation, and throughout the Fall semester.
- Read the Connections assigned book and complete any required assignments related to the reading.
- Attend all Connections Common Hours (Wednesdays, 12 –1 pm) throughout the Fall semester.
- Register for INT 4740 New Student Seminar Practicum.
- Volunteer as a tour guide for special campus events (i.e., Admissions Open House, Homecoming/Family Weekend, etc.)
Qualifications
- Be registered.
- Have at least a 2.30 cumulative GPA.
- Be able to articulate and support the mission and initiatives of Castleton.
- Be able to initiate and facilitate small group and interpersonal interactions.
- Exhibit knowledge of campus life and University programs.
- Be available for both summer registration weekend sessions and orientation in August.
- Be available during the spring semester for training programs.
- May not be a member of the Residence Hall Staff or TRIO Summer Transition Staff.
Report to
SOS Coordinators and the Assistant Dean of Students.
Remuneration
1 – 3 credits may be available from some departments with permission of Connections faculty; Room and board during the summer registration session(s); Partial travel reimbursement.
