Each non-filer (parent and/or independent student) needs to submit the following items
How to Request IRS Verification of Non-filing letter
Provide documentation from the IRS or other relevant tax authority dated on or after October 1, 2019 that indicates a 2018 (for 2020-21 FAFSA) or on or after October 1, 2020 that indicates a 2019 (for 2021-22 FAFSA) tax return was not filed with the IRS or other relevant tax authority.
To make the request by mail or fax, complete Form 4506T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return.
Complete lines 1-4, following the instructions on page 2 of the form. Note that line 3 should be the most current address as filed with the IRS. This is the address the letter will be sent.
Check box on line 7 for Verification of Nonfiling.
Enter tax year date on line 9.
Sign form. Also check the box attesting that you have the right to sign the form. Enter phone number of non-filer.
The Verification of Non-filing letter provides proof that the IRS has no record of a filed Form 1040, 1040A or 1040EZ for the year you requested. It doesn't indicate whether you were required to file a return for that year.
Processing form 4506t means verifying/validating the information provided on the form. If any information does not match the IRS records, the IRS will notify the tax filer that it was not able to provide the Nonfiling letter.
Submit Verification of Non-filing letter to Castleton University by secure fax to 802-468-6097. Please write student name and Castleton ID# on the letter.
