Castleton's season comes to a close, 5-3 at Nichols
Dudley, MA - The Castleton State College field hockey team fell 5-3 at Nichols College in the quarterfinal round of the ECAC New England Championships. The loss closes Castelton's season out at 12-7, the best mark in program history. Nichols improves to 16-6 and will take on Bridgewater State in the semifinal round of the tournament.
Carolyn Griggs tallied a pair of goals, and Molly Fraher added one, while Kayla Blank assisted on all three. It wasn't enough, however as the Bisons scored three in the first half and two more in the second to earn the win.
MaryKate Frodema scored just 29 seconds into the first half, collecting her own rebound and scoring on goalie Trisha Clark. Fraher would answer for the Spartans at the 14:13, assisted by Blank's penalty corner.
The teams would trade goals once more in the first half over a span of 26 seconds. Nichols freshman, Eileen Clinton scored her 16th goal of the season assisted by Lauren Pettoruto and Frodema 16:40 into the half. Griggs would knot the score at two, scoring her 14th goal of the season assisted by Blank at 17:06.
Clinton would score once again unassisted before halftime, and Nichols would never look back. The Bisons would take a 5-2 lead by the 60:16 mark. Junior Jackie Dwyer chipped in a cross from Pettoruto 11:44 into the second half while freshman Samantha Lacerra knocked in a scramble in front of the net with ten minutes left to play. Griggs got the Spartans to within two with 4:54 remaining but it was too little too late.
Clark was outstanding in goal, stopping a career-high 20 shots.
Griggs ends the year with a career-best 15 goals, while Blank set an all-time mark for the Spartans with 17. [Box Score]
