Griggs scores three early, Castleton remains undefeated in NAC

Castleton, VT-Carolyn Griggs scored three goals within the first 6:18 of play, and Castleton held on for 4-3 victory over North Atlantic Conference foe, Simmons College to improve to 9-3 overall and a perfect 5-0 in conference play.

Griggs opened the scoring just 1:17 into the game when she sent home the rebound after Simmons goalie; Jen Szkolt made a nice save on a Sarah Flore shot.

Griggs would strike again at 4:03 off a Trishia Fellows assist from just inside the circle. The junior forward would tally her third goal, and 10th of the season just over two minutes later off another Fellows assist to stake the Spartans to the commanding 3-0 lead.

After a Shark timeout, it seemed the visitors came out with much more intensity and settled play. Simmons would score with just under 20 minutes remaining in the first half to cut the lead to 3-1. Maggie Weeks took one of five Shark penalty corners on the afternoon, played the ball into the center and ended up collecting her first goal of the season off a rebounded Sam Green shot.

Castleton would collect its fourth and final goal of the game with six minutes remaining one Suphada Rom’s first collegiate goal, assisted by Heather Brock.

Simmons tacked on two more in the second half to make close the gap, but it would prove to be too little, too late. Natalie West scored on a penalty stroke, and with 11:28 remaining in the game Austyn Joaquin scored off an Emily Sypher assist.

Szkolt finished the game with three saves, while Castleton goalie, Siobhan Whittemore, pressed into the first start of her career due to injury made five saves in the win.

Simmons falls to 3-8 (1-3 NAC) with the loss and will host NAC foe, Wheelock on Tuesday at 47:00 pm. Castleton takes to the road next weekend for a pair of NAC games, at Thomas on Saturday and U. Maine-Farmington on Sunday. [Box Score]
