Castleton sweeps North Atlantic Conference doubleheader from Wheelock
Castleton, VT-Castleton State College swept a North Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader from Wheelock College, taking the first game 2-1 and the second 8-0 in five innings.
Game One: Angie Carpenter struck out 10 and allowed just one unearned run, while earning the complete game win. Carpenter allowed a single in the first and an infield single in the fourth as the senior right-hander shut-down the Wildcat offense.
Castleton put together a two-run third inning and it proved to be all Carpenter needed. Annie Hartman walked and score on a Hilary Bemis infield single, after a Wheelock miscue in the field. Laura Rogers singled, moved to third on the same Wildcat error and scored on Allison Lamay’s sacrifice fly to center.
Wheelock starter, Stacy Seidner kept Castleton off balance for much of the game, mixing her pitches well. Seidner allowed two earned on six hits while striking out one.
Wheelock’s lone run came after Elise Ordile singled to lead off the fourth, moved to second on a wild pitch, and took third on a dropped pop fly. Ordile came home on Valerie Cook’s rbi-ground out.
Lamay led the Spartan offense with a 2-for-2 day and one RBI.
Game Two: Laura Rogers tossed a complete-game shut-out, allowing just two hits while striking out four in the mercy-rule shortened win. Rogers also went 2-for-2 with two doubles, a walk, two runs scored and an rbi to lead the Spartan offense.
Castleton plated four in the first, two in the second and two in third to earn its fourth-straight win.
The Spartans improved to 8-16 overall and 7-5 in conference play as they plated eight runs on four hits and five Wheelock errors.
The Wildcats (5-17 (1-13 NAC) never had a runner reach second base as Stacy Seidner and Elise Ordile each had singles.
