Castleton earns first win, 3-2 over Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Rutland, VT-Castleton State College skated to their first victory of the young 2006-07 season, defeating M.I.T. 3-2. The Spartans scored with under two minutes remaining in the game to earn the win. Adrianna Riggio (Buffalo, NY) scored her first career goal to give Castleton the win.

The Engineers got on top with a power play goal early in the second period when Catherine Harding (Wilton, CT) scored to make it 1-0 assisted by Mary Harding (Wilton, CT). Castleton scored the equalizer 12 minutes later on the power play on a goal by Maryanne Diehm (Rockaway Beach, NY) assisted by Brianna Behmke (Upper Darby, PA). The Spartans would strike under four minutes later to take a 2-1 lead into the final period on Katelyn Greene’s (Westborough, MA) first goal of the season. M.I.T. battled back to even the score two minutes into the final period on a goal by Mary Harding. Both teams had opportunities to break the tie, but some nice goaltending on both sides kept the game knotted until Riggio sent home the game winner.

Vanessa Carter (Summerstown, Ontario) stopped 30 shots in the win. With the victory Castleton improves to 1-2 on the young season. M.I.T.’s Maria Prus (Pittsburgh, PA) was credited with 21 saves in the loss, which dropped the Engineers to 0-3. Castleton returns to the ice on November 17 when they travel to M.I.T. for a 7:00 face-off. [Box Score]
