Castleton opens season with loss versus Emerson College
Milford, NH – The Castleton State College women's lacrosse team dropped its season-opener 20-12 to Emerson College in non-conference action at the Hampshire Dome in Milford, NH.
Castleton freshman, Marie VanDerKar tallied four goals to lead the Spartan offense. Stephanie Pearce, Nicole Adams, Nicole Bouchard, and Aimee Goulette got in the scoring column for the Spartans as well in the effort.
Maeghan Ross led Emerson with eight goals, while Jessie Kalikow and Laura Miley added four goals apiece. Emerson improves to 3-2 with the win.
The teams were tied at three half way through the first half when the Lions scored six goals to take a 9-6 lead into halftime. Emerson scored five unanswered goals twice in the second half to put the game out of reach.
The Spartans trailed 15-11 with under eight minutes to play before Ross scored three of her goals in the next six minutes of play to put the Spartans away for good.
Meredith Tufts made 14 saves in the win for Emerson. Meredith Pope made four first half savesfor Castleton. Francesca Mazzola relieved Pope in the second half, making six saves.
Castleton looks to get in the win column March 26 when the Spartans host Green Mountain at a 4:00 pm start. Emerson returns home March 17 when the Lions host Elms at 5:30 pm. [Game Stats]
