Green Mountain defeats Castleton 1-0
Poultney, VT – Green Mountain College showed signs early on in the game that they remembered last season’s 2-1 defeat at the hands of Castleton, a game which saw the Spartans score with just 57 seconds remaining to steal the win. On this day the Eagles were relentless from the beginning, controlling play for much of the first half, and finally getting the game winner in the 60 th minute.
The first half saw the Eagles with plenty of opportunities as forwards Renee Brecter (Landenberg, PA) and Andrea Pollack (Arlington, MA) kept the pressure on Castleton’s defense. Castleton’s keeper, Kim Allen (Newtown, CT/ Newtown) was up to the task, stopping all four shots she faced. In the second half it appeared that the Spartans had new life, unleashing a pair of deliberate attacks on the Green Mountain defense. The effort was stymied by the Eagle backfield, and momentum began to swing back with 35 minutes to play. Castleton was awarded a goal kick with 30 minutes remaining but Brecter intercepted the ball and made a nice pass to teammate Pollack who beat Allen for the game winner.
Allen finished the game with 7 saves as the Spartans fell to 1-2-1. Castleton is back in action on Saturday, September 16 when they travel to NAC foe, Bay Path College for a 1:00 PM game. Eagle keeper, Claire Davis (Newark, DE) was unblemished stopping three shots to earn her second shut-out of the year. Green Mountain takes a perfect 4-0 record into Saturday’s game at Albany Pharmacy beginning at 12:00 PM. [Box Score]
