Plattsburgh State ruins Castleton’s home opener, 4-2
Castleton, VT – Plattsburgh State’s Teresa Barber ( Stillwater, NY/ Stillwater) brought all of the offensive punch the Cardinals would need, and the Plattsburgh midfield controlled play much of the game to keep a determined Castleton team at bay. Barber, a senior co-captain, scored 4 goals.
Barber scored at the 16:17 mark on a Katrina Liska (Ausable Forks, NY/Ausable) cross to open the scoring. Castleton would answer 11 minutes later on a perfectly placed shot from freshman Sarah Reaber-Spina ( Starksboro, VT/Mt. Abraham Union). Reaber-Spina received a short pass from Tracy Stala ( Nanuet, NY/Nanuet) and lofted a shot from the 18 yard line that landed in the back of the net. The first half ended at 1-1. Barber pushed home her second goal of the game five minutes into the second half unassisted, after the ball was misplayed just inside the 18 yard line. Stala would answer back in the 53 rd minute, after a Plattsburgh obstruction call gave the Spartans an indirect kick inside the penalty box. Casey FitzGerald (Bantam, CT/Litchfield) one touched to Stefanie Reuter ( Manchester, CT/ Manchester) who lofted a pass to Stala’s head and into the goal. That was all of the scoring that Castleton would muster as Plattsburgh controlled play from then on out, getting the game winner off a Barber strike in the 55 th minute, and an insurance goal from Barber in the 83 rd minute.
The Cardinals held a distinct 33-4 margin in shots, and a 7-1 margin in corner kicks. Kim Allen ( Newtown, CT/ Newtown) took the loss for the 0-1-1 Spartans, stopping 14 shots. Kathryn Lind (Garden City, NY/Garden City) moved Plattsburgh to 2-0, stopping 2 shots. Castleton is back in action on Saturday, September 9 when they travel to NAC foe, Johnson State for a 3:00 PM game. Plattsburgh plays again on Friday, September 8 when they open the Cardinal Classic at Plattsburgh versus Lasell College at 4:30 pm.
