Castleton opens NAC season with shut-out win over Johnson St.

Castleton, VT-The Castleton State College women’s soccer team opened the North Atlantic Conference season with a 3-0 win over the visiting Badgers of Johnson State College.

Castleton controlled play throughout, out-shooting their guests 33-6, while holding a 12-1 edge on corner kicks.

Katie Hoxsie opened the scoring for Castleton in the 10th minute when she one-timed a goal off from a Meryssa Wacholder corner kick.  Just a freshman, Wacholder took all 12 corner kicks and served several perfect balls into the center of the six-yard box.

With under 10 minutes remaining in the first half a hand-ball inside of Johnson State’s penalty area set up Carissa Chadburn’s penalty kick to make the score 2-0 entering halftime.

Castleton would tack on one more insurance goal in the 85th minute when Wacholder once again placed a perfect corner kick into the six-yard area and Jillanna Simon put home the goal, just out of the reach of Johnson State goalkeeper, Jennifer Wulfson.

Micole Bellimer started in goal, playing the entire first half and recording one save. Cady Kerin and Nakita Baldic split the second half in goal, combining for five saves (Kerin 3). Wulfson finished the day with 12 saves in the loss.

Castleton improves to 2-1 (1-0 NAC) while the Badgers fall to 1-2 (0-1 NAC). The Spartans return to Alumni Field on Thursday to play host to St. Michael’s College at 4:00 pm. Johnson State plays host to College of St. Joseph (Vt.) on Thursday at 4:00 pm. [Box Score]
