Castleton shades Norwich 2-1 in home opener

Castleton, VT-The Castleton State College women’s soccer team defeated Norwich University 2-1 in their home opener.

Castleton’s Erin Hanlon broke a scoreless tie at 38:15 off an assist from Meryssa Wacholder.

The Spartans would take the 1-0 lead into halftime, and have many chances to tack on an insurance goal, but were kept at bay by Cadet keeper, Nicki Hunsicker. Hunsicker ended the day with four saves, none more spectacular than the one coming 15 minutes into the second half when she turned away a Tracy Stala chip shot from eight yards out.

Norwich would even the score with just over 11 minutes to play when freshman, Karissa Doyon chipped in a beautiful shot from the end line that curved just out of the reach of goalie, Micole Bellimer’s hands.

Stala sent home the game winner just 10 seconds later after a ball was misplayed inside the six-yard box and Ashley Ledoux re-directed the pass to Stala who put it past Hunsicker.

Norwich pressed the Spartan backfield, but could not find the net as Bellimer finished the game with five saves and her first win on the young season.

Castleton improves to 1-1 on the season while Norwich falls to 1-2. The Spartans are back in action on Saturday at 3:00 pm when they host conference foe, Johnson State. Norwich also opens up their conference season at home on Saturday, 11:00 am versus Rivier. [Box Score]
