Castleton faces top competition, finishes fourth at Colby-Sawyer Shootout

New London, NH-The Castleton State College women's tennis team opened the 2007 season on labor day weekend, taking on Colby-Sawyer, Plymouth State and St. Michael's College in the Colby-Sawyer Tennis Shootout. St. Michael's took home five of the six division titles, including all four singles brackets and one doubles bracket. Colby-Sawyer finished with two third-place finishes and Plymouth State took home four third-place finishes.

In “A” singles competition, St. Mike's Lindsay Horne (Scituate, Mass.) tore through the competition en route to a 7-5, 6-2 victory. In the losers bracket, Plymouth State's Jill Deyermond (Atkinson, N.H.) recovered from her first round loss to take home third place.

In “B” singles, St. Mike's Michelle Wood (Chatham, N.Y.) defeated teammate Catherine Dalton (Easton, Mass.) for the title. On the back side of the bracket, Colby-Sawyer's Olivia Ellis (Jerico, Vt.) took home third by defeating Plymouth's Briley Boisvert (Goffstown, N.H.) 8-2.

In “C” singles, it was once again St. Mike's, as Ranks came up with the victory. On the other end of the bracket, Colby-Sawyer's Carolyn Drake (Great River, N.Y.) and Kate Lucas (Manchester, Mass.) came out with the co-victory.

In “D” singles, the story was once again St. Mike's, as Ash came up with the 6-2, 6-1 victory over teammate Jackie Smullen (South Burlington, Vt.). On the other end, Plymouth's Denise Huckins (Holderness, N.H.) came away with the 8-0 victory over teammate Liz Wong (Portsmouth, N.H.).

In “A” doubles, there was no doubles champion, but on the back end, Plymouth State's Jill Deyermond and Buffy Garland (Freedom, N.H.) came away with the third place crown.

In “B” doubles, the St. Mikes team of McDonald and Ash came away with the victory by default over teammates Smullen and Dalton. On the back side of the bracket, Plymouth State's Boisvert and Arpone came away with the 8-3 victory over Colby-Sawyer's Willis and Ferris. [Bracket]
