The Castleton State College Athletic Training Education Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education, the national agency that sets and maintains standards and guidelines for Athletic Training Education Programs. I hope you will consider the Athletic Training Education Program at Castleton State College as a place to pursue your college education.
The Athletic Training Education program includes formal education in the following content areas: risk management and injury prevention, pathology of injuries and illnesses, orthopedic clinical examination and diagnosis, medical conditions and disabilities, acute care of injuries and illnesses, therapeutic modalities, conditioning and rehabilitative exercise, pharmacology, psychosocial intervention and referral, nutritional aspects of injuries and illnesses, health care administration, and professional development and responsibility. Your classroom learning will be enhanced through comprehensive clinical education experiences. Clinical education experiences include assignments with men and women's varsity athletic teams, cooperative experiences at other area colleges, high schools, Killington Ski resort and the Vermont Orthopedic Clinic. In addition, students will complete a general medical rotation in which they will observe other health care professionals in the practice settings of emergency medicine, orthopedics, family practice medicine, chiropractic medicine, physical therapy, podiatry, and progressive physical conditioning. Dr.'s Gammons and Russell are involved in the academic and the clinical education components of the program. Other medical specialists that are formally involved with classroom instruction include a Physician Assistant and a Physical Therapist.
The Athletic Training Education Program is competitive and students must apply for acceptance into it during the spring semester of their freshman year. Students also have the opportunity to be involved in the Athletic Training Club. This club provides student members with fund-raising opportunities, a lecture series that exposes students to various sports medicine professionals, and attendance at regional and national professional meetings. Program faculty are committed to offering students enrolled in the Athletic Training Education Program the academic curricula and clinical experiences necessary to prepare each individual for successful completion of the Board of Certification Examination and achieve entry level employment as a Certified Athletic Trainer.
Seeing Castleton for yourself is the best way to decide if this college is for you. Contact the admissions office or me personally for more information. We encourage you to sit in on a class, talk to a faculty member and meet with other students who are enrolled in the Athletic Training Education Program.
Sincerely,
