Despite the large amount of time university students are expected to spend studying material and learning on their own outside of the classroom, little is known about what specific student study habits look like. This study sought to develop a description of what transpires when students study mathematics together in self-formed study groups outside of the classroom. Two study groups were observed over the course of a semester in order to identify the activities they engaged in while studying mathematics. This led to the creation of a list of observed macrotasks: verbally-cued transactions that identify what activity the group is currently engaged in doing. This list of macrotasks is an important step forward in being able to describe the differences in how study groups allocate their time and which social and sociomathematical norms get enacted outside of the classroom.
This event is free and open to the public.
