Recycling Unit:  Students will learn about the recycling program at Castleton (segregation of cans, plastic and glass bottles, the campus effort to collect recycled waste two times a week from all buildings on campus and the contribution of all students on campus) Students will also visit Castleton Hall to see how this dormitory and others on campus are following sustainable practices (recycling centers, low-wattage flourescent light bulbs, etc.)

Friday 25th - Sunday 27th: IOCA ~ Spring Conference (http://IOCA.sonicfiber.com/email.php) @ CSC / LAKE BOMO State Park!!!

As many of you know, the campground that was hosting us in Sabael, NY told us their infrastructure would not be able to accommodate us almost last minute. Fortunately, Conference lives on especially thanks to Nick Korda and the rest of the Castleton Outing Club crew!

We will be having the event at Bomoseen State Park near the Castleton State College campus. There are many more things for us to do up there than the last location, so the weekend is bound to be a blast! I hope you are ready because we are. Here are a few things you can do while up there:

·         Hiking (Birdseye Mt.Rattlesnake Ridge – *Hanley Mt. (Hang Glider hill) – AT & LT – Mt. ZionGlen Lake – *MORE)

More information on the grounds can be found at:

http://www.vtstateparks.com/htm/bomoseen.cfm.

 Grab directions here:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=22+Cedar+Mountain+Rd+fair+haven+vt&sll=43.67253,-73.2412&sspn=1.225723,2.17804&ie=UTF8&ll=43.658185,-73.22937&spn=0.038313,0.068064&t=p&z=14&iwloc=addr&iwstate1=dir

We will have a check-in table at the park entrance where we will also be shuttling people and their cars around – we need to park nearby. So look out for that. We will check you in, hand you trip information such as maps, and get you all settled there. Any general questions about conference may be directed to myself, Andrew Ragone (ajr9166@rit,edu) whereas other specific concerns, especially those regarding the new location, should be directed to Nick Korda (nicholas.korda@castleton.edu).

 See you all soon!

May- (Long Trail Sections after school is out!?!)

Friday 2nd: (Leave OC Room - Haskell Hall Basement @ 2pm)

- Friday 2nd:
Nick K., Eliza B., Nick H., and Kacy C. went for a drive down Birdseye Castleton Road and cleaned up a dumping of sheet rock that someone had thrown to the side of the road. They pulled 12 large garbage bags out of the woods and put them on the side of the road so a town truck could come and pick them up and dispose of the trash properly. After Nick H. and Kacy C. were dropped off in West Rutland, Nick and Eliza continued to explore. They visited the large quarry where they saw that at least three vehicles had been pushed off the edge of the cliff down into the quarry. They also saw numerous tires and discussed ways of cleaning the area. The whole time they wondered how people can just trash Vermont and such beautiful areas!?!

Green Up Day! Nick K, Dan S, & Roy M (a few OC'ers) Greened Up Watkins Hill Road. They rapelled into the ravine and set a system with a rope for pulling items out. Items ranged from Windows (with a lot of glass!) and tires, among other bits of trash, plus a deer skeleton (They respected the animal thus putting its remains in a respectable area) were all pulled out of the 90ft ravine next to the road. They spent almost 4 hours doing this!
After dropping a few kids back at school, Nick, Eliza and Dan decided to go exploring all the back roads around Birdseye. They discovered some ATV/logging trails and had quite an adventure! Thankfully the car remained in tact with Nicks skilled Vermont driving.

-Sunday 4th:
Nick and Eliza took their bikes to the logging trails to find out about any loops (since the car is not an ATV they opted for biking instead). They found out that indeed the trails do connect (but only after 2 hours of good biking!). Yet Nick and Eliza both messed up there bikes fairly good. Nick Ripped off his de-railer (sticks in the gears are no fun). Eliza lost a part to her breaks and they became loose. Eliza was quite exhausted by the time they got back to the car, but continued to get excited and more interested for the next adventure! Nick was just thrilled because he just KNEW it!

Nick, Eliza, Dan, Justin & 4 other CSC Students also helped out with the Castleton Elementary and Lee Academy (Boston Area) Elementary schools by showing them what outdoor gear and equipment is like. While most of the CES students knew exactly what they were looking at, the Boston kids had never seen most of the stuff we were showing them. A few kids were absolutely amazed with the snowshoes and asked Eliza to try them on, which she helped them out with. Also, most of them were real excited about pitching a one-person tent and finding out how many of their small bodies could fit inside! A couple of the smaller girls even fit inside Nick's large hiking pack! They got a treat not only was the view from the Kehoe Conservation Camp above Bomo amazing (Mt's from Manchester to Brandon in view!) but some great cultured food (wonderful change from the same ol' same ol' @ Huden)

-Monday 5th:
Nick & D-Fresh took out a boat and went to the College Athletic Pond (dodging baseballs) to clean it up! They pulled out 5 tires, 2 buckets of trash/bottles/cans, fuel cans, garbage bins, wood, and much more (taking over 2 hours to do...
They had fun in the mud for sure! They also found day old fresh MOOSE prints at the end of the pond. They also had alot of nature around them! They were ready for a good meal after that.
Also THANKS PHYSICAL PLANT for picking up the items we pulled out the next morning!

-Tuesday 6th:
Nick & Leo M. went out to the pond to pull out the 2 chairs that remained from someones ice fishing adventures. They used a pool hook and the boat to yank and drag the chairs out. They also cleaned up a small bit more and found alot of golf balls...  They went and found that Painted Turtles Sunning, Frogs, Bull frog, Scared Large Toad, Salamanders (Mating & laying eggs), Mama Canadian Goose on her nest & father close by.
