Hope-Holden House, Rural Gothic style, 1851. South Street. James Hope was born in Aberdeen, Scotland, in 1818. Following the death of his mother, he and his father emigrated to eastern Canada when he was nine. After his father’s death of cholera, in 1834 he walked to Fair Haven, Vermont, presumably alone. He studied at Castleton Seminary, became a portrait artist in Montreal, and returned to Castleton in 1849 to join the faculty of the Seminary.
