Considered a member of the “Hudson River School” of 19th Century art, Hope enjoyed a successful career as a teacher and portrait artist. In 1852 he opened a studio in New York City and for the next 20 years painted portraits in the city in winter and landscapes in and around Castleton in summer. In 1861 Hope recruited more than 60 volunteers and led them into battle at Bull Run as Company B of the Second Vermont Regiment. His war paintings include the ten-foot long Army of the Potomac. He ended his days in Watkins Glen, New York. (from Antiques magazine, January, 1978)
