Old Chapel, 1821. The Chapel, as it’s called, began its life as Castleton Medical College, Vermont’s first such institution, on Main Street near the site of the present town library. Townsman Carlos Sherman bought the medical college in 1865, after it had closed, with the intent of razing the building. As a way of making the chore of moving the building someone else’s problem, at a Christmas party in ‘65 he grandly announced that he was giving it to Miss Harriet Haskell for her seminary (now Castleton State College). Miss Haskell was too clever for Mr. Sherman, however. Her quick-witted response was, “Well thank you, Mr. Sherman; but of course, a gentleman always delivers his gift to a lady!” Thus, Carlos was embarrassed into doing just that.
