Introduction
The library is central to the intellectual and cultural life of the College. It provides information and services to the academic community in support of teaching and research. The collection contains over 500,000 items in a variety of formats, including over 130,000 bound volumes, over 300,000 microform items, and numerous nonprint media. The library is a selective U.S. Government Documents Depository, providing access to federal information for all of southern Vermont. Library electronic systems take advantage of full internet access to provide researchers with opportunities to use a rapidly expanding variety of resources. Library services include circulation, reference, reserve, interlibrary loan, and information literacy instruction. Castleton is a member of the New England Library Information Network (NELINET) and Online Catalog Library Center (OCLC). Notably, the library has an integrated online system that is networked with several other libraries in the state and is available via the internet. The present building was constructed in 1965 with a major addition doubling its size in 1979. Approximately 250 readers can be accommodated in individual or group seating, carrels and conference areas. The library also includes Media Services, the Student Gallery and Lounge, the Vermont Room and the College Archives. Media Services provides audio-visual equipment and service for the entire campus. Equipment available include VHS editing equipment, Elmo visual presenter, Avid Cinema, VHS camcorders, tape recorders/players, overhead, slide and 16 mm projectors, and 35 mm cameras. The library's collection of Vermontiana is housed in the Vermont Room. It includes an extensive collection of town reports, gazetteers, histories, and census data. The College Archives contain materials relating directly to the college.
