Admission
Admission to the music department is by audition only. In addition to the general Castleton College admission requirements, all potential music students must successfully complete the requirements outlined in the music department audition and scholarship application form. Auditions are held throughout the academic year on Mondays at 12 noon. Audition and Scholarship Application
Minors A minor in music may be earned by completing a minimum of 18 credits in music chosen in consultation with an advisor in the Music Department.
Careers Graduates pursue careers focused on music, either teaching, performing, or advanced studies. Graduates of Castleton’s music department hold teaching positions in public schools and colleges throughout the United States, perform worldwide, and hold prominent positions in other musical fields.
Activities Castleton has three main performing ensembles: Collegiate Choral, Wind Ensemble, and Jazz Band. These auditioned ensembles are open to all members of the college community.
• The Castleton Collegiate Chorale is a touring choir comprised of students from many different majors in addition to those focussing on music. Chorale activities include several concerts per year, a weekend choir retreat, an annual regional tour, and a European concert tour or Carnegie Hall residency program every two years. Chorale repertoire ranges from choral masterworks such as Mozart’s Requiem, and Orff’s Carmina Burana, to contemporary folk and pop tunes.
• The Wind Ensemble performs several concerts per semester. The literature is challenging and appropriate for collegiate musicians. Recent performances have included works by Percy Grainger, Kurt Weill, Gustav Holst, and Charles Ives.
• In the Jazz Band students gain performance experience in all styles of jazz and develop improvisation skills. Guest musicians and vocalists often perform with the group.
Scholarships
Prospective students are automatically considered for music department scholarships during their admissions audition. On campus auditions are held throughout the academic year on Mondays at 12 noon; however, the deadline for scholarship consideration is March 1, 2006. Students who are unable to audition on campus may request permission to audition via a high quality audio or video recording. Scholarship Application |
