Castleton alum Travis Bush’s videography work recently made its way to television screens across America after he worked as a camera operator for an episode of the History Channel’s series Modern Marvels, which aired in April. The episode highlighted the Panama Canal project, aimed at widening the canal to double its current capacity.
Now living in Longmont, Colorado the Communication graduate has been working for MWH Global, a premier international infrastructure engineering company and lead technical designer for the Panama Canal expansion project, also known as the Third Set of Locks.
Bush’s role includes providing corporate messages both internally and externally to customers and stakeholders. However, his responsibilities increased when the History Channel sought to produce a Modern Marvels episode focusing on the project, and due to his Communication background chose Bush to operate as a camera crewmember.
“You get to see and learn about things you never thought you would see in your life and that’s really, really cool,” said Bush of the wide range of opportunities his current job has allowed him to partake in.
Bush was thrilled to be part of the project and found the only real challenge for him during the process was sifting through all the hours of video footage to pick and choose what would be used on the show.
The 43-year-old communications specialist credited his former professor, Bob Gershon, Chair of the Castleton Communication Department, with providing him with the toolset needed to be successful in various aspects of the communication field.
“The reason I went to Castleton was because of the radio station being there, but it was Bob’s classes that shifted me from radio to television,” Bush said, adding that he has since taken classroom learned concepts and applied them to real life situations. “Just being in his class sparked that interest.”
