Spartan pride carries on with each and every Castleton graduate once they walk across the stage at Commencement and begin the next chapter of their life, and this is especially true for 2011 alum Justin Garritt, whose school spirit is never in short supply.
A stellar student, athlete and university leader, while at Castleton Garritt served as SGA President, Class of 2011 President, captain of the Alpine Ski and Tennis teams, Director of the Castleton Elementary Mentoring Program, and Athletic Director at Castleton Elementary School. Now working as a sixth grade Math professor in an inner city Baltimore school, Garritt has found a creative way to incorporate his alma mater into his teachings.
“All of these programs and people I met in these programs played a part in shaping who I am, what type of teacher I am, what type of coach I am, and what type of person I am,” said Garritt, who taught at a Baltimore middle school for three years after graduation as part of Teach for America, a recruitment program that trains and sends teachers to undeserved communities around the country, before beginning his current position at a new school.
Adding some Castleton flare to his classroom, Garritt and his students recently participated in Mock College Acceptance Letter Day, where students were lead in discussions on the process of being accepting into college and accomplishing their educational goals. Throughout the day each homeroom in the school was renamed to their teacher’s alma mater and students were granted mock acceptance letters and t-shirts from the university, and taught the important role that education plays in accomplish their dreams.
“My students felt that despite the almost impossible barriers that stand in their way, they too can climb the mountain to and through college,” Garritt said. “The excitement, hope, and smiles in our students and their families eyes really helps set the tone for the year.”
Since beginning his teaching journey Garritt said he has gained valuable insight on the privilege of education. Honored as the 2014 Castleton Outstanding Young Alumni of the Year award, he believes his various educational experiences have allowed him to see things through a new perspective.
“Justin Garritt bleeds 343 green, and carries the very best of Castleton with him where he goes, and with whoever he teaches or role models,” said Castleton President Dave Wolk. “It is who we are, and Justin embodies the best.”
