On Saturday before the start of the academic year as part of orientation, First Year Seminar (FYS) students dedicated their morning to the Castleton Green Campus Initiative. Working to implement the university’s mission to develop global citizens that care about the environment and limited resources, students helped to clean up the community for the cause.
“All FYS groups participated in green up service projects on campus, in the town of Castleton, and even in nearby Hubbardton,” said Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Co-chair of the Green Campus Initiative Working Group, Andrew Vermilyea. “Many groups worked side by side with community members on their tasks, were welcomed into their homes, and even reminisced about Castleton 20 or 30 years ago when some of the residents were at school here.”
After completing their service projects, students participated in an on campus Green Initiative Scavenger Hunt to get better acquainted with the sustainable practices and resources Castleton has implemented. Students captured pictures of their FYS groups during the activity, posing in front of solar panels, windmills, electric car charging stations, water bottle refilling stations and numerous other areas of our campus that showcase sustainability.
