At Spring Convocation, senior and Hydeville, Vt. native, Maria Burt was honored as the Spring Commuter Student of the Semester. A sociology major, Burt was recognized for her hard work in the classroom and dedication to community engagement.
“As her faculty advisor I found her to be a terrific student,” said Dr. David Ellenbrook, Chair of the Sociology Department. “She is very friendly, easy to advise, and easy to instruct in class.”
Burt recently launched a new Rotaract Club at Castleton dedicated to community service. While serving as President of the group, she also organized and led the club’s mission trip to Honduras.
On track to complete more than 160 hours of community service, Burt will be honored with her Civic Engagement Certificate at her May 2015 graduation. After she receives her diploma she plans to continue her education, and volunteer work, looking to pursue a master’s degree in social work with a concentration in planning and policy development.
Ellenbrook commended Burt on her commitments both in and outside of the classroom, recognizing her unparalleled determination and dedication to helping others.
“Maria has a significant track record in terms of volunteerism in the community. She is dependable, punctual and is always well prepared for class,” he said.
