Proving that the spirit of giving can be spread year round, various Castleton faculty, staff and alumni have once again partnered with the Women’s Ice Hockey team and the Rutland Regional Medical Center to raise awareness and necessary funds for breast cancer research through the annual Pink the Rink fundraiser. Having created a variety of handmade products from tote bags to custom made quilts to be sold at the event, those involved have been hard at work stitching to play their part in the battle against cancer.
“It’s a nice way for us to show support and help out with a good cause,” said Coordinator of Education Technology Services and co-organizer of the project Karen Sanborn, adding that it takes approximately a year’s time to thoroughly plan out the event. “We want to help the team out with raising money so we always hope for a good turn out.”
This year’s fundraiser will feature over 35 tote bags carefully crafted by volunteers, new to the Pink the Rink event. In addition to the one of a kind bags, there will also be various quilts up for raffle, along with fleece and knitted items from scarfs and socks to hats and mittens.
Since 2011, the group has raised more than $7,000 from their handmade products in addition to the funds raised by the Women’s Ice Hockey team. All event proceeds go directly to the Foley Cancer Center for the Breast Cancer Program at RRMC.
Fans interested in purchasing items can plan to attend the Pink the Rink game held on Friday, February 10 when the Spartans host Southern Maine at Spartan Arena at 7 p.m.
