Always searching for unique and creative ways for prospective students, alumni, community members and current Spartans to dive deeper into the Castleton experience, the University recently introduced the addition of department-based blog platforms. Launched by the Castleton Marketing and Communications Office, the campus-wide blog system is open to academic departments and University offices and allows people from across campus to gain insight into the everyday happenings of one another.
“I think they add another layer of communication and transparency to what different departments are doing,” explained Director of Digital Media Katye Munger. “There’s a limit on what can be done on the website, so a blog allows you to really talk more from a personal standpoint and more from an opinion or first person standpoint on a topic.”
The Castleton Polling Institute was the first to publish a personalized blog on the new platform in June of 2015, followed by the University’s Office of Information Technology. Since then four more diverse departments have jumped aboard.
“So far each of the blogs are very different in their personality and their expertise,” said Munger, adding that a blog can serve as a long-term content solution that continually adds life and personality to a department’s work and area of expertise.
The platform continues to serve as a place to highlight stories that help build relationships among readers, as well as grow the reach of a department. Current blogs range from community engagement reflections and international students experience entries, to the IT Department’s tips and advice write-ups.
