Castleton University will once again showcase its philanthropic spirit by participating in #GivingTuesday, the global day of giving that seeks to transform the way we think about, talk about, and participate in the giving season.
Castleton’s first attempt at #GivingTuesday 2015 was a monumental success thanks for the generosity of the Castleton community. With a focus on “Giving Green,” the University used their signature green as a way to bring everyone together raising over $10,500, with 194 monetary gifts, a new single day record, from 21 different states and three countries.
The day also sparked the spirit of giving amongst students and community members on campus. In addition to monetary gifts, the Castleton Student Government led clubs in collecting more than 3,000 items to donate to various area charities, the Castleton Rotaract Club raised $100 as a donation to the Pure Water for the World organization, and the Red Cross blood drive amounted in 135 lifesaving gifts.
“I am very enthused about Giving Tuesday, especially seeing how it is growing so well and is more inclusive than ever,” said Castleton President Dave Wolk. “Giving Green is a way to feel connected to a place we all love and care about so deeply.”
With #GivingTuesday 2016 celebrated on Tuesday, November 29, this year’s efforts build upon the solid foundation set in 2015. In honor of its founding year 1787, Castleton is asking all participants to give $17.87, which helps support the University’s academic departments, dozens of programs and over 1,800 students.
Students and other campus groups, such as Residence Life, Student Government Association and varsity athletics teams, plan to join in on the day by hosting a variety of clothing, food and toiletry drives, making cash donations to their charitable organizations of choice and partaking in a #GivingTuesday residence hall decorating contest.
Finally, the Gift of Life Marathon will kick off its annual 12 Days of Giving at President Dave Wolk’s house, where his porch and dining room will serve as the hub for the blood drive efforts. President Wolk will personally provide free rides to anyone who needs one, which can be arranged by calling (802) 468-1203.
Castleton hopes that the atmosphere created on #GivingTuesday, on-campus, in the community, and through social media, will make this an event that people can look forward to for years to come and showcase the giving spirit that runs so deeply at Castleton.
