Want to become a CA?
Thank you for your interest in the Community Advisor (CA) position. CAs are an integral part of the Residence Life Department who have the most direct and constant contact with students. CAs are assigned to a floor or house of 16-50 students and their primary responsibility is to act as a facilitator of community, and enhance the on-campus living experience for their peers. Facilitation of a positive and empowering community is achieved through various means that include but are not limited to: Building relationships with and amongst all students on the floor and in the building, serving as a positive role model, hosting social and educational programming, monitoring facilities for health and safety issues, being knowledgeable about resources on campus to assist students, and articulation of college rules and regulations. On the following pages you should find an abundance of information to inform you about the CA position. We look forward to your candidacy!
Building Relationships – In Residence Life we believe the more the CAs know the residents and vice versa the easier the job is. Moreover, the quicker the relationships are formed the better the understanding of expectations between the CAs and the residents are.
Role Modeling – As a CA it is crucial that you are able to serve as a positive role model for your peers. CAs are held to a higher standard then others students on campus therefore your actions will be judged more critically by your peers.
Programming – Programming is an essential, almost daily, component of the CA position. It is not expected that CAs recreate the wheel when programming. Programming can be passive in nature such as a bulletin board or other written pieces available to students or it can be much more grandiose, active, educational or social in nature.
Referral Agent – It is imperative that CAs are knowledgeable about the resources available to students on campus or that they know how to find the right resource for a student if they do not know the immediate answer
Administrator – In addition to all the person to person work that CAs do on a daily basis, CAs are also required to attend a weekly staff meeting and a one on one with their supervisor, complete online paperwork on a regular basis, serve in the on duty rotation within their building, serve on one departmental committee, return to campus early for training or to open the halls from break and staying late when break starts to close the halls.
College Representative – CAs are required to be knowledgeable and able to enforce college and departmental policies and document violations in a timely manner. In addition it is expected that CAs serve as a liaison for the residence life staff conveying student concerns to their supervisor
Team Member – Above all we expect that as a whole and within individual building staffs, CAs are a strong, supportive, and cohesive team all year long.
