In the words of NCHE, we need to "provide time to think, to talk, to react" about the issues of history.
The cornerstone of this program is the sharing of ideas,
expertise and information. Through workshops and professional
support, the program will create a network of teachers dedicated to
passing on what they have learned - creating a ripple effect that will
benefit educators and students in the entire region.
Teacher-participants will
- Attend workshops at Castleton State College twice per
semester to discuss historical content and teaching strategies. In the first meeting as a group they will discuss various works pertaining to a common theme. In the second meeting they will discuss effective strategies.
We have specifically invited history majors to be part of the discussions
during these meetings. We encourage the teacher participants to invite the history majors to their classrooms and to become more involved in a mentoring program.
- Observe Mentor Teachers and have
an opportunity to discuss teaching from primary documents with
them. The teacher-participant will then share with other teachers the insights and suggestions
gained.
- Meet with the teacher support team who will help them with content and teaching strategies.
Support teams composed of an education professor and two American
History professors will visit participating schools at least four times during the school
year
