African American Experience 1619-Present is an introductory course organized chronologically.
African American historical and cultural experience spans the 400 years from the beginning of the Transatlantic Slave Trade and evolution of unique cultural and social traditions to the emerging Black Lives Matters Movement. The institution of slavery and Jim Crow reflected the contradictions of the basic tenets of American democratic principles and ideology of all ‘All men are created equal’ and the impact of white privilege and systemic racism that persists today. The impact of black churches and the formation of political and social organizations provided the means for African Americans to survive, have a sense of belonging and organize in the face of persistent adversity. The fight to eradicate racism, civil rights and voter suppression, equality, equity and social justice is continuing. This introductory course includes people’s voices and experiences in the historical context. The creation of lessons for your classroom are due for sharing on July 30th. A twelve-to-fifteen-page research-based paper on a related topic of your choice is due on August 5th.
