Instructor: Dr. Edward Wilkin
Location: Online

Dates and Times:

April 2 – April 29, 2023

Credits: 3 Graduate Credits
Tuition: $1,195

Course Description

Have you hit-a-wall? Do you feel burned-out as an educator or leader? We have been seeing an unusually high number of teachers and leaders leave the education field in larger number than before. Throughout this course teachers and school leaders can practically apply concepts through continuous reflection to teaching, learning, K-12 leadership, and higher education leadership while effectively identifying personal causes, symptoms, and develop possible strategies to combat burnout. Virtual classes, including the 1st class, will be determined by the majority of the participants in the class via email about 2 weeks before the start of the course.

Audience: Any Educator, Leaders K-12+, Higher Ed Leaders

Course Goals & Objectives

Throughout this four (4) week course, those enrolled will be introduced to several methods and techniques of building understanding and strategies to combat burnout in the education through personal reflection. Students will be guided through a personal practice of reflective exercises and personalized coaching between instructor and student to foster a deeper understanding of the causes, symptoms, and strategies of educator burnout. Using real-life practices, students will reflect on their current level of burnout and refine what processes and techniques will work best for them through readings, and then develop a plan of action that will include personal tools to combat educator burnout. Facilitation will be through group discussion and personal meetings. On completion of the course, the successful student will be able to:

  1. Define and understand how students and adults use reflection and the importance of utilizing this practice to foster self-appreciation and actualization.
  2. Define causes of educator burnout as it relates to the individual students' current role (i.e., teacher, school leader, etc.)
  3. Understand effective strategies to combat educator burnout.
  4. Implement new learning into the real-world situations where the student works simultaneously as course learning is moving forward (Plan of Action).
