Field Placement Opportunities

Field Practicum

During their senior year, students are placed in agency settings to gain valuable experiences in the field of social work. These placements opportunities are an integral component of the social work curriculum. Students within the major have a minimum of 400 supervised hours of field experience. Through their field practicums, social work students refine their professional skills and have the ability to blend course content with on-the-job experiences in service provision, outreach, networking and resource development to further their knowledge.

Students work with experienced social service agency personnel, preferably with a B.S.W. or M.S.W. degree. Onsite field instruction is provided by a social work faculty member with a M.S.W. degree and practice experience.

Advanced Standing for MSW Degree

All graduate schools of social work that provide a M.S.W. degree are required by the Council on Social Work Education to give B.S.W. students advanced standing status. Therefore, Castleton B.S.W. graduates can usually acquire their M.S.W. degree between nine and 12 months, rather than the two years required for all other undergraduate majors.
