Instructions for Students on Completing Federal Direct Loan Process

All new borrowers must complete both the Direct Loan Entrance Counseling and a Master Promissory Note. For transfer students who have borrowed previously with Direct Lending, you may not need to complete these items. You can check the status of Loan Entrance Counseling and verify a completed Master Promissory Note at studentaid.gov.

To complete the Direct Loan Entrance and Master Promissory Note please follow the instructions below:

  • Go to: studentaid.gov. To view this website effectively, you will need one of the following supported browsers: Microsoft Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox.
  • Log in using your FSA ID
  • Under Complete Aid Process tab: select Complete Entrance Counseling and select the correct level (undergraduate or graduate student).  Complete the session. Print or save confirmation at end for your records
  • Under Complete Aid Process tab: select Complete Master Promissory Note (MPN) and choose subsidized/unsubsidized.
  • Under Complete Aid Process tab: select Complete Annual Student Loan Acknowledgement.

The entire MPN and Loan Entrance Counseling process must be completed in a single session, so be sure you have enough time before you start. The MPN generally takes approximately 10 minutes to complete and Loan Entrance Counseling takes approximately 30 minutes. When fully completed, you will receive an email confirmation within 24 hours.
