In 2021, Castleton became home to an NAACP collegiate chapter – the only of its kind in Vermont. The Castleton chapter was created by students in collaboration with Castleton faculty and staff. Since its inception, the chapter has hosted various events, including film discussions, trainings, a multicultural fashion show, Black History Month programming, and more.
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is the oldest civil rights organization in the United States. Its mission is to achieve equity, political rights, and social inclusion by advancing policies and practices that expand human and civil rights, eliminate discrimination, and accelerate the well-being, education, and economic security of Black people and all persons of color. Its programs serve to challenge inequality and racism and to make an impact in areas like criminal justice, healthcare, and more.
In addition to local area branches, the NAACP has more than 600 youth councils, high school chapters, and college chapters across the country – including Castleton’s.
