Definitions: Types of Databases
Types of databases used for research:
- Library catalog - an inventory of what is owned. The Vermont State Colleges Library Catalog is a catalog of books, videos, and other materials owned by Vermont State College Libraries.
- Periodical Index – a database used for finding citations to articles in periodicals (journals, magazines, newspapers). Some periodical indexes also include references to books, chapters, and other "non-periodical" literature.
Many indexes give abstracts, or summaries, for each article.
Some indexes have full-text of periodical articles.
