Castleton's own Art Professor Oliver Schemm is publically displaying some of his most recent work as his original sculptures are currently featured as part of a multi-artist exhibit in Saratoga, New York. Titled “Elemental Narratives,” the diverse exhibit is located in the Arts Center Gallery at the Saratoga Arts, running until May 5.
“This is a group show that also consisted of Diane Fine, a master printmaker, and watercolor and acrylic painter Daisy Rockwell, granddaughter of Norman Rockwell,” explained Schemm, whose sculptures have been displayed throughout the state of Vermont, appearing in galleries in Burlington, Rutland, Manchester and Stowe, as well as across the greatest U.S. in various locations in Florida, Montana, Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, and New York.
Through the exhibition’s theme, each artist aims to portray moments and events that had a profound impact on them personally, binding their art through the common subject of storytelling. Using the narrative of history, memory and time, Schemm unites perceived function with absurdity, mixing time period and cultural traditions in his work. Artist Daisy Rockwell’s paintings depict moments of both war-torn Aleppo and her mother’s terminal illness, while Diane Fine attempts to tell the story of an ageless conversation in a non-verbal way.
“While our work is all very different, Saratoga Arts did a fine job curating the show to create a flow through the gallery,” said Schemm. “So far I have sold two pieces during the run of the show.”
