The Rutland Herald’s Tom Haley has been named the 2021 Sportswriter of the Year by the National Sports Media Association. This marks the 10th time that Haley has won the honor.
Haley, who graduated from Castleton in 1973 with a degree in Communication, began his sports writing career as a member of The Spartan, Castleton’s student newspaper. He took his passion and dedication for local sports writing, especially in the promotion of women’s athletics, with him to the Rutland Herald in 1987, where he still serves as the publication’s sports reporter.
In addition to his love of sports, Haley’s love for Vermont also runs deep. Last year, he published “Maple Mayberrys and Other Sweet Spots,” which highlights some of his favorite sports stories from different towns and cities throughout the Green Mountain State.
Haley shares the accolade with Michael Beniash of the Caledonian-Record. The duo will be recognized at the 62nd NSMA Awards Weekend in June.
