Castleton University welcomes influential author and historian Nancy Marie Brown as she presents on her most recent book, Ivory Vikings: The Mystery of the Most Famous Chessmen in the World and the Women Who Made Them on Wednesday, April 13 at 2 p.m. in the Jeffords Auditorium.
The distinguished author of several books on Viking and Icelandic history and culture, will speak to Castleton students and any other interested intellectuals on the topics covered in her most recent book, as well her other highly-praised works. Her contagious enthusiasm mixed with her humorous writing style makes her synthesis of literature and science appealing to all.
Brown has visited Castleton’s campus twice before, once in 2012 and 2014. Her most recent research matches the topics covered in Castleton’s Iceland course this spring semester.

ABOUT NANCY MARIE BROWN
Nancy Marie Brown is an American Author who began her career as a science writer in 1981 while earning her master’s degree in Comparative Literature at Penn State University after receiving a Bachelor’s degree in English writing. She became a staff writer and later editor of the Research/Penn State Magazine where she covered science and scholarships of all disciplines from 1981 to 2003.
She has published six general interest books as well as one young adult novel. Her works cover medieval literature and modern archaeology with fascinating myths and facts. Her works include The Far Traveler: Voyages of a Viking Woman from 2007 and Song of the Vikings: Snorri and the Making of Norse Mythology from 2012. Her most recent publication, Ivory Vikings: The Mystery of the Most Famous Chessmen in the World and the Women Who Made Them has received enthusiastic reviews from the New Yorker, Kirkus Reviews, and the New York Times.
