Fall 2020 Housing Contract Addendum

Due to COVID-19 there will be additional policies that will be included in this addendum.  The addendum is part of the Castleton University Housing Contract for the 2020-2021 academic year.   It is the expectation at Castleton University that all members of our community will act in the best interests of the community and follow the Spartan Pledge. All policies and procedures for living on campus will be enforced.  Students living on campus must follow all policies in the University handbook along with the modified policies for this addendum. There are a number of modified policies for every student living on-campus. These new policies are outlined below and are subject to change from time to time as determined by the University, CDC, and Department of Health Guidance at any time.  The modified policies are part of the Housing Contract and the Residence Life and Housing policies for the 2020-2021 academic year. A violation of these requirements or the Spartan Pledge will be a violation of your Housing Contract.  Those violations will be adjudicated through the Student Conduct Office.  This may result in immediate removal from University Housing, or other sanctions.  Please read this information thoroughly as each residential student must acknowledge your review and understanding of this information, as well as indicate your willingness to abide by the modified policies. If you believe you cannot meet or comply with the modified policies contact Residence Life and Housing at 802-468-1259 or e-mail residencelife@castleton.edu to discuss your departure from campus.

Mask Policy

When in a residence hall: All students should have a suitable face covering with them at all times.  Students should wear face coverings such as cloth masks when outside of their room including public areas, common areas etc...  Those living in a suite on campus will decide as a group a mask policy for the suite area when only the residents of that space are present. When a person that does not live in the suite or room enters the suite common area/room a mask must be worn and social/physical distancing must be practiced.  If a University official enters your living space you should have a mask available for your use.

When you leave a Residence Hall: All students should have a face covering with them at all times and should be prepared to wear it if they cannot follow social/physical distancing guidelines.

Residential visitor policy in suites and rooms

Due to Covid-19 and the safety of our residents, the guest policy in the residence halls is that no guests from off campus (i.e. nonresidential students, family, and friends) are allowed to be in the residence halls. Only residents, and University employees performing their job responsibilities, will be allowed.

Modifications to Residential Policies

  • Only eight people allowed in suite common areas at any time including the residents of the suite.
  • Only three people are allowed in rooms at any time including the residents of the room.
  • Students will only have ID card access to their residence hall.
  • Only two people can use recreational equipment, pool table etc. when using equipment students must wear masks when participating.
  • No more than two people can ride in an elevator in the residence halls.
  • All move in/move out procedures must be followed in accordance with Residence Life.
  • All students must abide by the social/physical distancing guidelines put for forth by the State of Vermont all times. This includes, but is not limited to, when in another student’s room, lounge spaces, bathrooms, laundry rooms, and lobby areas etc. Students must comply with all posted signs in lounges and common areas to support and follow physical distancing guidelines.
  • Students must sign and agree to the Spartan Pledge, along with the addendum to the Housing contract to live in the residence halls.
  • The University reserves the right to change or cancel specific room assignments in the interest of health, discipline, security, energy conservation, or the general welfare of the students, and reserves the right to change or alter the living and/or recreational arrangement in the residence halls when deemed appropriate.  The University reserves the right to consolidate the room assignments when deemed necessary.   During the first two weeks of each semester there is a room freeze; any room changes will take place after the freeze, with the exception of extenuating circumstances. Occupants may be offered the opportunity to pay an additional charge to occupy the double room as a single if space is available.  Students requesting room changes must obtain prior approval from the releasing Area Coordinator and the receiving Area Coordinator.

Students must sign and agree to the Spartan Pledge, along with the addendum to the Housing contract to live in the residence halls.
