Castleton Director of Budget and Finance, Heidi Whitney, took vacationing to new heights on her recent September ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa.
Accompanied by ten other climbers, she spent a total of seven days hiking, scaling and camping along the dormant volcano’s edge, preparing to experience the view from the summit.
Located in Kilimanjaro National Park, Mount Kilimanjaro stands at over 19 thousand feet above sea level, is Africa’s highest mountain, and was a personal-high climb for Whitney.
“I have been adventure traveling for the past five years,” said Whitney, adding that she recently compiled a “Bucket List” of activities and travel destinations she hopes to visit.
Already checked off her list is scuba diving in Australia, biking through Tuscany, and exploring her way around Italy, all experiences that she describes as incomparable.
Since returning home from her African voyage, Whitney has already begun organizing her next excursion. Plans of visiting Egypt, China and Germany are at the top of her list, with a culminating goal to one day visit the sunken ruins of the Titanic.
Though she has no intention of taking on Mount Everest anytime soon, Whitney encourages others to go out and enjoy the wonders of the world through travel.
“There is such a big world out there,” she said, “With a lot of places to see and things to do.”
