Events that are part of Soundings: An Introduction to the Liberal Arts are marked as A Soundings Event! Students should be aware that not all events on this calendar count for credit.
This calendar includes an extensive listing of Castleton's cultural events for spring 2008. Members of the community are welcome at these performances and lectures, although it should be noted that seating for 12:30 events is often limited and students get priority.

  Esau Pritchett returns with the inspiring readings of the speeches of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This year he will be joined by Dr. Michael Kiernan sharing the words of Robert F. Kennedy. They will be accompanied by the Castleton Chorale and Jazz Ensemble under the directions of Dr. Ronald Sherwin and Professor Glenn Giles.

Tracy Samantha Schmidt: Covering Virginia Tech

Writing as a professional journalist since high school, Ms. Schmidt was at Virginia Tech in the aftermath of the tragedy. After being told by her Time magazine editor to find a witness, she and a colleague used Facebook to find students who would be willing to tell their story of that terrible day.

Phi Eta Sigma: "Rebuilding a sense of self after a traumatic brain injury".

Anyone can experience a brain injury, from a concussion to a severe head trauma. The short and long term consequences of a brain injury are unique to the individual and the bio-mechanics of the injury, but an important aspect of recovering from a traumatic brain injury involves assisting a person restore their "sense of self". Dr. William Frey will cover the five dimensions of self-specifying information that are the focus of rebuilding a survivor's "sense of self".

 Once on this Island is a re-telling of Hans Christian Andersen's "The Little Mermaid," with story and Lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty. This musical tells the story of Ti Moune and Daniel, two lovers from distinctively different backgrounds. The gods of Earth, Water, Love, and Death cause the lovers' lives to intersect and send Ti Moune on a journey that will test the strength and purity of her love. An enchanting play for all ages.

Castleton History Professor Dr. Andre Fleche, Phi Eta Sigma Lecture: The Civil War in a Modern Perspective

Castleton History Professor Dr. Andre Fleche will examine the ways in which world revolutions affected American interpretations of their war. American observers took note when Latin Americans won their independence in the 1820's and European revolutions occurred in the mid-nineteenth century. Confederates and Unionists drew lessons from those events about nationalism, revolutions and the emerging liberal world-order that they then applied when war broke out in the United States.
