Course Description

The Big Ideas

There are many opportunities to teach writing in a Maker/Steam Space.  We will use the book New Realms for Writing by Michele Haiken. Available at iste.org/WritingRealms as our backdrop for examining how reading, writing, and research fit wonderfully with the creativity, critical thinking, and innovative design opportunities in Making/STEAM.  This course applies to K-12 classrooms.  Please purchase this book before the start of the course.

What We'll Do

We will examine the free and low budget, accessible, and more expensive projects using resources found in classrooms and Maker/Steam Spaces across Vermont schools.  Some possibilities include:

  • Greenscreen Videos
  • Stop Motion Animation
  • Coding--Scratch
  • 3-D printing
  • Augmented Reality
  • Robots (Ozobots, BeeBots, etc.)
  • Talking Posters
  • Light Up Books
  • Pop-Up Books
  • Up-Cycled Cardboard
  • Legos and Play-Doh
  • Web-Based Published Books (BookCreator)
  • And Your Ideas of Course
